The Essence of Ashtanga

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a method of opening ourselves to the fullness of ordinary experience. The practice works with opposing forces of breath and invites these to align. When the breath aligns, the experience of the body opens up, revealing endless patterns of sensation. The practice is to be present with these patterns, allowing them to unfold in the open expanse of our awareness.
Through this practice, we give ourselves space, and we allow our minds to breathe. Our thoughts and feelings begin to expand and contract in an open flow of consciousness.
In this workshop, we explore some techniques from the Hatha tradition that bring the practice alive—moving our bodies from the inside out, tracing internal currents of breath, balancing subtle patterns of sensation, and settling ever more deeply into the postures themselves.
These techniques reflect the Tantric origins of Hatha Yoga. They expose the depth and brilliance of our experience, so we can touch the essence of contemplative consciousness with the whole breathing body. This essence is compassion, as perfect openness to reality.

A special weekend exploration, uncovering the techniques that brings Aashtanga alive; moving our bodies from the inside out, tracing infernal currents of breath, balancíng patterns of sensation, and settling more deeply into the posturas themselves.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
SURYA NAMASKAR
Surya Namaskar means “Salutations to the Sun. In the context of yoga, the Sun is not only the celestial body that gives us warmth and daylight, but the radiant center of the human body, where our vital forces converge. In Surya Namaskar, we are propitiating to this center, inviting our vital forces to rise up from the altar of the pelvis and burn away the sediment of our conditioning. This foundational workshop explores the internal dynamics of Surya Namaskar, showing us how to approach the practice with precision, clarity and devotion.

BREATHING INTO ALIGNMENT
As our practice develops, so does our sense of alignment. What begins as a struggle for postural perfection becomes an endless exploration of the infinite wonder of embodied form. In this workshop, we learn a simple but potent method of exploring alignment, based on five distinct patterns of breath and movement that recur throughout the Ashtanga system. With this method, we learn to release our essentialist projections about outward form, and we use the postures to draw ourselves deeper into the immediate experience of the body.

MYSORE / GUIDED MEDITATION
This is a traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga Vinyasa class. We practice together, mostly in silence, following the natural cadence of our breath, and tracing the brilliant sequencing of the Ashtanga system. This is an opportunity for individual attention and assistance. Beginners are absolutely welcome, but instruction on sequencing will be rather limited. Some familiarity with the standing sequence is requested.

PHILOSOPHY: TASTING THE POISON
Yoga is said to be the antidote for the poison of conditioned existence. When the practice starts to work, the poison comes to the surface, darkening the waters of our minds. This experience can be troubling. It can induce shame, repression and other serious obstacles to practice. In this workshop, (which is an exploration of yoga philosophy and involves no formal practice as such) we discuss the process of meeting these experiences with compassion, and turning the poison into insight.

PHILOSOPHY: SHE WHO IS
In Tantric philosophy, the feminine is the natural principle of creation. She is abundant, excessive, unpredictable, and threatens to overwhelm us whenever she overflows. The secret of yoga practice is to make space for this principle, and to adore its unfolding, even as it threatens to flatten the ego. This is how we balance the forces of HA and THA from which the Hatha tradition takes its name. In this session (which is an exploration of philosophy and involves no formal practice as such), we explore the nature of the feminine, and the possibility of relating to the feminine intimately, through a colorful retelling of the Myth of Sati, “she who is.”
